This is one of the most vile books I have ever read and I couldn't make it out of the hospital scene. A virgin wakes up naked with her hands and ankles tied to a bed. One of her first thoughts is her would-be attacker is well built. He rapes her and she wonders why after the breaking of her hyman she doesn't feel pleasure. Guy number two comes in and rapes her. Hearing a rape victim refer to a penis as a cock was a first for me. She doesn't know how long she's been there but wakes up again, convinces them to give her tequila and untie her in an effort to escape. They pour tequila down her throat - she doesn't vomit with the alcohol on an empty stomach and both rape and sodomized her at the same time and beat her some more. Her savior comes to rescue her - he sees her get taken. He doesn't call the cops, just waits for her attackers to leave. Surprisingly she isn't freaked out after being brutally raped repeatedly, starved, sodomized and beaten, by a strange man touching her. She's too busy noticing his attractiveness and the most beautiful eyes she has seen. Despite her wrists being tied up she is somehow able to open a water bottle and down the contents without becoming sick - as she hasn't eaten anything and has only been forced fed tequila. She manages to pass out and wakes up in a lovely hospital gown and insists her savior stays with her during her rape kit. Let's go over a rape kit: they comb your pubic hairs, swab and check all of your orifices including those that have been severely bruised, they clean under your fingernails and clip them, they brush out your hair and take root samples, they give you a pelvic exam - there's a reason why this is done typically by a female doctor. The police questioning is traumatic and they expect you to go over every detail ad nauseam so they can catch the bad guys. The doctors tell you about the continued test you'll need to have to check for HIV. Her savior has the financial means to have a plane at the ready, a safe house, someone that can pick out clothes and necessities for her but doesn't have the resources to call the police when she is being attacked and she is already developing an attraction to this guy and believe me it is not survivor's appreciation. It's unrealistic, vile and sick and attempts to romanticize a "relationship" built immediately after a brutal gang rape. Talk to a rape survivor, doctor, cop, counselor and then let me know if you still think this vile story is romantic.

Relatively quick read - in that I read it in an evening, and also that the romance between Cassie & Jesse happens quickly. I did have some issues paragraph separation when ppl are talking? Truly not sure if that was a writer thing or a formatting thing. The plural of baby is babies; babies' is the possessive of plural babies. Cassie is kidnapped & brutally raped, but enters into a physical relationship w/ Jesse super quickly. And there are some small inconsistencies that I just feel an editor should have questioned...

But the story itself - I enjoyed it a lot. I LOVE this type of writing, as far as the H/h being together throughout the book, no big "fight" that they have to work through, the things they have to fight against are outside forces & they fight them together. They communicate openly, and I adore that. If it wasn't for the brutal rape aspect, the quickness of the relationship wouldn't even have raised an eyebrow for me.

Also, Vicki does a good job of introducing us to the characters we'll read about in books 2 & 3 - which I am looking forward to reading! )
I read this book last year but wasn't doing reviews back then...so after buying another book from this author I figured I better get it done!
First of all, I do not shy away from graphic violence or sex in books or film, but Cassie's rape was very disturbing to read, but in hindsight necessary to the plot, so we get an idea at how horrible these men who took her really were! Jesse has been watching because he is searching for his own mother's killers and waits until what he feels is the right time (and safest) to swoop in and save Cassie from these disgusting men. Parts of this book will make you cringe, but it is also a very sweet love story filled with healing and hope for a better future. Our heroine is a tough girl, having survived mistreatment in the foster care system (that is supposed to nurture and protect, but does anything BUT) and lives her life knowing she is the only one that she can rely on...until she meets Jesse.
Some criticism has been made of the fact that Cassie is so quickly pulled into a relationship with Jesse after being so horribly abused, and the truth is that so many victims of sexual and emotional abuse actually have such low self-esteem and opinions of their own worth, that any act of kindness might be enough to throw them into the arms of someone without time to heal. It seems unbelievable, but I get that Cassie is not used to be treated so kindly and she is after all, a young woman who still has the ability to recognize a kind and very good looking young man...so I just went with it and took the story for what it was. A love story of beauty born from ugly...a light that is found from a dark place...and healing inside and out to accept that you deserve love and tenderness.
I could feel as I was reading that this author put her soul into writing this book and it was probably as painful for her to write much of it, as it was for us to read it...but I am always hopeful when we get an HEA from absolute horrible beginnings.
